"Yo sí me cuido" (child abuse prevention)
~
According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mexico ranks first in child sexual abuse; of every 1,000 crimes committed in our country, only 100 are reported, and of these, only 1 results in a conviction. Statistics indicate that most occur at home or with family acquaintances.
To make matters worse, the lives of girls and boys unfold amidst everyday, normalized violence: physical, psychological, verbal, economic, virtual… so their development is at stake.
Thus, “I Do Take Care of Myself” emerged as an urgent call to action. Through a classroom workshop, children acquire self-care tools that enable them to identify risky situations, defuse them, and ask for help. The students learn not to remain silent and to express themselves to a trusted adult.
The "I Do Take Care of Myself" program has been offered since 2022, authorized by the Yucatán State Government's Ministry of Public Education (SEGEY), to sixth-grade groups in Cholul's primary schools, both morning and afternoon shifts. Each school year, there may be two or three sixth-grade groups requiring this training.
The workshop consists of 4 sessions for students and 1 session for their parents; each school year requires $36,000 pesos (includes workshop leader, materials and workbook).
Any contribution is welcome until the desired amount for the period is reached.
Every little bit helps and makes a difference!
